Finca Retana was established by an order of monks and takes its name from their leader, Father Retana. Initially producing rapadura (Guatemalan candy) and dairy cattle, in 1932 it went into the private sector and later in the hands of Fernando Cofino. Fernando has experimented with growing corn and avocados, but now his main crop is coffee.
20 families live in Finca Retana, where they have electricity and drinking water. Each permanent employee can also sow and cultivate 3.46 decares for his own needs. In addition, there is a school where children from the farm and children from the neighboring village study.
With such innovations and a farm where coffee pulp is converted into organic fertilizer and replanting local trees, Fernando continues to strive for excellence in cultivation, processing and social responsibility. The farm mainly grows 2 varieties of coffee, yellow bourbon and caturra. Their total processing is about 1500 sacks per year.
