Nicaragua is one of the biggest coffee producers in Central America. Coffee from this large but thinly populated country is of high quality and complex flavor. In the past, coffee production has suffered from devastating hurricanes and political and financial instability. Luckily, the situation has visibly recovered in the past 20 years. Producers are now keen to develop their agricultural practices within an improving infrastructure to revive their reputation in the specialty coffee scene. The 140-hectare-sized Finca Los Altiplanos has a truly sensational story. It was founded over 90 years ago by a Scottish farmer named Potter. In the late 1930s, Mr. Potter got caught in the civil war between the Government and the Sandinista forces and was forced to move back to Scotland. After his death, the Finca was sold to Nicaragua’s President Somoza García and in the 80’s it was confiscated by the Government. 14 years ago, Don Ricardo Cuadra Fajardo finally acquired the farm. This beautiful place is located in the mountains of the Dantlí El Diablo national reserve. The Juguina river borders the farm. The region of Jinotega in northern Nicaragua produces some of the country’s finest coffees. This particular coffee producer even participated in Nicaragua’s Cup of Excellence. It is well known for its volcanic and loamy soils and provides ideal conditions for coffee cultivation due to its rich and diverse microclimate. The hilly and mountainous land surrounding the farm is covered by a lush pine forest where monkeys, birds, and other native animals can roam freely. Don Ricardo and his family pay particular attention to the environment. Coffee is cultivated under shade trees. 30 hectares of the farm are kept as a natural reserve. For this washed coffee, the cherries are carefully selected by hand once they are red and ripe.
