Boquete, the most famous coffee growing region of the country is located in the west of Panama near the Costa Rican border. The region is a beautiful valley at the foothills of the Barú volcano. Measuring 3,477 meters, it is the highest mountain of the country. A river uniting several streams from the surrounding mountains, volcanic soil, constant rainfalls and predictable dry seasons as well as a moderate climate create perfect conditions for the cultivation of high quality coffees. Maritza Quintero, or as called by the locals Doña Mary, is actually a teacher at the finance and accounting department at the Universidad Tecnologica de Panama. It was out of her personal interest and passion for coffee that she bought the farm in 1992. Through the farm’s proximity to the Barú volcano, stunning views allow her to enjoy Boquete’s natural beauty every morning by seeing the volcano, the Boquete city square and the river Caldera curling through. In the past, Doña Mary used to ship her cherries to rather big mills for processing. As a result, here cherries were blended together with other local coffees. However, recently she collaborated with the neighboring farm Ledira in order to process her coffees separately. This way, she can ensure that her personal dedication and care will be reflected in each cup.
