Peru is generally known for its dazzling views onto Machu Picchu embedded between high slopes of vividly green mountains. Imagine this setting and go about 2,000 km northwest on the map – up to the state of Cajamarca, bordering southern Ecuador. Located in the northern mountainous region of Cajamarca, the cooperative Servicios Multiples Sol y Café (Coop. Sol y Café) was established in 2008. Bordering Ecuador and the equator itself, the Cajamarca region benefits from consistent warm temperatures during the day and cool nights in the absence of clouds. On the one hand, this interplay of temperatures leads to slower growth of the beans. On the other hand, slower growth results in very solid and more aromatic beans. Hence, a microclimate for exceptional coffee prevails.
Coop. Sol y Café consists of 59 local organizations of approximately 1,000 farmers, of which 10% are women. The cooperative members are dedicated to protecting their local environment making use of best sustainable farming practices. They collectively formulate environmental, agronomic, and economic decisions to help member families and communities develop and grow. Coop. Sol y Café holds Rainforest Alliance, Organic, and Fairtrade certifications. All cooperative members have access to health insurance, state-of-the-art agricultural technology, schooling, and further education.
