KSU Rahmat Kinara has been running their operation since 2007. Their first members were just about 200 farmers at that time. Slowly but consistently they have improved, growing up to 750 farmers and covering an area of about 1,200 ha under coffee. The farmers quickly recognized the advantages of certifications and therefore they pursued to become Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade certified. They achieved this goal in 2010 and 2013 respectively. Most farms are located in Central of Aceh and surrounded by natural forest. These forests are the natural habitat of the Luwaks (civet cats). Thanks to the certifications it is prohibited to catch or cage Luwaks and other animals. This mostly nocturnal animal moves freely through the farms eating coffee cherries. During harvest, farmers work on their farms intensively picking red, ripe cherries but also collecting the Luwaks feces containing the coffee parchment after having been digested. After collection the parchment goes through an additional cleaning process and afterwards it is dried until reaching a moisture content of 12%. Finally the farmers sell the dry parchment to KSU Rahmat Kinara.
